Mrs. Irene La Verne Fry Davis peacefully transitioned home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 9, 2025, at the age of 90. Her remarkable life was a testament to dedication, faith, and love, leaving an enduring legacy that continues to inspire all who knew her.
Born on October 14, 1934, in the close-knit community of Prairie View, Texas, Irene was the cherished third of four children to Francis and Ethel Mae Fry. Raised amidst the vibrant academic atmosphere of Prairie View A&M University, she thrived both academically and personally. Irene graduated as valedictorian from Prairie View Training School, a reflection of her early commitment to excellence. Her passion for learning led her to Prairie View A&M College, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics in 1955, followed by a Master of Education in 1960. During her graduate studies, she proudly joined Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, embracing sisterhood and service.
It was at Prairie View A&M College that Irene met the love of her life, Hulen M. Davis, Sr. Their union, beginning with marriage on January 22, 1956, blossomed into a beautiful family of seven children: Glenda, Hulen Jr., Carla, Julie, Wanda, Bruce, and Gene. Together, they built a life grounded in faith, education, and community.
Irene’s professional journey was deeply intertwined with Prairie View A&M University. After teaching in Brenham and Port Arthur, Texas, she returned to Prairie View in 1963 to serve in the Registrar’s office. Over an impressive 53-year career, Irene became a cornerstone of the university’s academic administration, supporting presidents, faculty, and countless students with unwavering dedication. She retired in May 2010 as Associate Registrar, leaving behind a legacy of excellence and commitment.
A woman of deep faith, Irene was baptized at Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and confirmed at St. Francis of Assisi Episcopal Church, where she was an active member and choir singer. Her love for music was profound—she was a classically trained pianist and violinist who found joy in playing, dancing, and nurturing her plants. Irene’s vibrant spirit was complemented by a sharp wit and a surprising passion for professional wrestling, showcasing her multifaceted personality.
Mrs. Davis is lovingly remembered by six of her children: Glenda (Terence), Hulen Jr. (Pamela), Julie (John – deceased), Wanda, Bruce (Dorie), and Gene; along with six grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews, and a wide circle of friends and relatives who were touched by her kindness and strength.
